International Journal : Improving Reading Comprehension Skills Through the SCRATCH Program
Hello guys, welcome to my blog again.
Okay, for this moment, I will continue my review about the second journal before. So, now I will reviewing the next compenent, that's "Methodology". Then, check it out !!
In this methodology, researcher has written that :
1) Design
For the design of the methodology, this study use the action research design. Action research design is described as a systematic process that is conducted to solve the problems and improve the existing status. However, the authors is prefer to use participant action research, so the study was planned and conducted to participant action research. Moreover, this method will support with the SCRATCH Program in reading comprehension.
2) Participants
As a whole, the authors decided to include three elementary schools in the Eskisehir province within the research process. Those schools will be classified as Elementary School A (high socio-econimic level), Elementary School B (middle socio-econimic level), and Elementary School C (low socio-econimic level). This is for fourth grades. In this method, the authors use form of the texts of narrative and informative text, ten open-ended questions were included related to each text. On the data gathered through the form, the authors use SPSS 22 in correlation analysis.
So, these are the results of reading comprehension mean scores between narrative text and informative text.
✓Narrative text : Elementary School B has the lowest scores in reading comprehension. It means that they had more difficult in reading comprehension among them.
✓Informative text : still same as the narrative text that Elementary School B has the lowest scores in reading comprehension. It means that they also had more difficult in reading comprehension among them.
From the result of the scores, the authors found that in Elementary School B, the students has feel anxiety.
3) Preparation of the text
The authors use “readability formula” of Atesman to calculate the difficulty levels of the text. This formula was adapted the Flesch formula in Turkey, so the difficulty of the text will determined as easy, moderate and difficult. After all of them have done to prepared, the text will be divided into some sections in the SCRATCH Program, each section will be on a single screen. Beside of the text, there will be visual and the text turn into audio stories by vocalizing each screen. Also, all of the texts were presented on the computer through a program, not any printed materials for students just look on the screen of the computer.
4) Data gathering tools
Because the authors use action research, the data will be gathered through interview, observation or documents. Moreover, there will be two kinds in collecting data.
- Quantitative data, the authors use informal reading inventory, readability evaluation rubric, participant selection forms, identification form for developmental level in reading comprehension, and identification form for developmental level in reading comprehension administered to whole class.
- Qualitative data, the authors use observation notes, researcher diary, video recordings, students’ Scratch Projects, teacher interview form and student interview form.
5) Data Analysis
For data analysis, the authors use some forms. There are three kinds, such as Correlation Analysis, Kendall W Test, and Thematic Analysis. From all of the kinds, there are divided into two, that is quantitative data and qualitataive data.
- For quantitative data, including Correlation Analysis and Kendall W Test.
- For qualitative data, including Thematic Analysis. This analysis will be consists of six steps.
Okay, that is all from me today, I hope this will be useful for you guys. Have a nice day😊
