Improving Students’ Reading Competence through DRTA (Directed Reading Thinking Activity) Technique
Introduction

From what she said, in my review that English still assumed as a difficult subject to be learnt in Indonesia. English has been introduced as a subject since primary schools, because some primary schools have included English in their curriculum. Moreover, for the best reslut, english curriculum must be improvement in learning process. Thus, the government tries to develop the quality of teaching and learning English in Indonesia. Also, for teaching process a teacher must has professional competence to teach English as well. Then, the process will be effective.
She said that the purpose of reading is a process that makes sense of words, sentences, and connected, it’s called comprehension. ‘Reading is a set of skills that allows readers rapidly decode text while maintaining high comprehension’(National Reading panel,2001). If we see, there are many students that have some difficulties in using English for comprehending English text, so one of them, the researcher have done research of students of D-IV Midwifery Program in Kadiri University. She found that their difficulties are in identifying, recognizing, determining text and information, also finding meaning. It can be seen from their reading test in 2015. Thus, to resolve the problem, the researcher tries to use DRTA technique in teaching English. This technique can improve and help students’ build critical reading and thinking skill, because the activity uses predicting and confirming strategies.
